Artists' statement
I use materials that allow me to work quickly. This speed enables me to work more directly and respond immediately to what happens on the paper or canvas. What I love most is being completely in service of the drawing or painting during the creative process, doing exactly what it needs. In those moments, I disappear as an artist and as a person, entering a state of hyperfocus where I sometimes only later realize what I have made. I seek those moments of disappearance, and it feels paradoxical to want to immediately interpret a piece after making it. What matters most to me is that when you look at it, you feel that it is in motion, that something is happening that you can’t really put into words, allowing you to look at it differently again and again. I almost always draw human figures. While these figures are expressive, they are not detailed or defined. They are never portraits of real people. In this way, I hope to create an image that can be meaningful for every spectator. Lately, I have been exploring how my work can serve as a form of protest. Protest is often loud and clear, but my work does not lend itself to that. That brought me to the question if, alongside the loud protest that is very much needed, one can also protest through softness? For this question I use a different material; big transparent cloths that I paint on that refer to flags or banners.
